Being about halfway through with half marathon training for my third race, I’m already looking towards race day and what I need to be prepared.I’ve found that the most important thing when it comes to race day comfort is finding the proper attire. What is the proper attire? Well, it varies from person to person, but whatever you choose must be moisture-wicking! If you’re running a half-marathon, I’m sure you already knew that, right? Chaffing ain’t no joke, people.
Investing in the right pieces doesn’t have to cost a pretty penny either. I found my Addidas capris, which I prefer over shorts for distance running (they don’t move as much), for only $24.99 at Marshalls (they were originally $40!), and I scored a pack of moisture-wicking socks at TJ Maxx on the cheap as well!
My other running attire essentials? A great pair of running shoes, and a moisture-wicking hat. As far as other essentials go, I’ll never run a race again without a running belt. Sure, your non-runner friends might mercilessly make fun of you for carrying a “fanny pack,” but let me tell you, when you have your phone accessible to locate your family and friends post-race (without having to search or trek back to the bag drop), you won’t mind the jokes.
The belt is also great for carrying your ID (in case of injury or post-race celebratory beverages), money, and even GU or Shot Bloks.
Lastly, I always carry my iPod shuffle. I am a no-music runner through and through and truly enjoy the peace of running without music, but a little music can really help through a rough patch in a race. In fact having music pretty much carried me through miles 11 and 12 during my last race.
Last bits of advice:
-Leave the jewelry at home (including the rings!) Sweat makes my engagement ring constantly spin, which is way more annoying than it sounds.
-Pack a bag with fresh clothes, socks, and shoes for the bag drop!
-Never try anything new on race day! Make sure you figure out what clothes are most comfortable, if running with a belt works for you, what you’ll eat for breakfast, etc. beforehand!
Have you ever run a 10K, half marathon or full marathon? What are your running essentials?

great tips I have done a half marathon and I totally agree with not wearing new clothes.
I love Brooks running shoes! I ran the Richmond half last year, and loved it! Good luck with the rest of your training!
Nice tips! I myself am not a runner, and I find myself slightly jealous of those people who have the ability to train for long distance races. But on a side note: I love finding gym clothes/athletic wear at Marshalls and T.J. Maxx – definitely my go-to places for it all!
You are such a workout champ! I love seeing what other things people consider “musts” for working out. For me, it’s a great pair of leggings, a bright tank, my Asics shoes and a killer playlist!
Haha, this may just be the only occasion when a fanny pack is acceptable 🙂 I’m not a runner but I totally admire people that can do marathons! Thanks for linking up with us!

Training for a half marathon is something I really want to do soon. Great tips- I’m going to remember these!
I ALWAYS struggle with where to my keys! What a good idea!
I agree! I am not running a marathon, but when I work out I need to always be dressed the right way where I have comfort and still look cute haha 🙂

Great tips! I’m sending this over to my bestie who is running her first half in a few weeks! I want that little fanny pack myself, it’s so cute!
what cute running clothes! that definitely helps with the motivation!! and how sweet that you are part of that program – yeah for free clothes! 🙂
I hope someday I start running again so I can use these tips! They are terrific! Especially about the jewelry. I always take mine off except my wedding ring and I always always regret it halfway through. Or at least I used to. Back when I actually ran. Haha 🙂
Such a great running outfit! If I ran I would probably wear something quite similar, ha ha. I probably shouldddd start doing it to keep in shape but I’m so lazy
Fun fact – I’m TERRIBLE at running! I can’t believe you can do a 1/2 marathon…you are totally my hero! xx
Love this this! I am still completely undecided about what top I want to wear, especially if it’s cold at the start. I so need to remember the drop bag idea too! Good luck with training!!
Your running look is great on you. I love capris over shorts when taking part in a long workout too.

These are really nice tips , as far as i think , the money and mobile phone is very very necessary .
I’m with you on the running belt! My new favorite running belt (I used to use SPI Belts) is the FlipBelt – wide waistband, doesn’t jiggle like the SPI Belt did for me, and comes in some cool colors! http://www.flipbelt.com/
Gus are a NECESSITY! Which reminds me, I’m totally running out…time to stock up!
I need to invest in some new running gear. I took a running class/joined a group at the beginning of the year and it was great, but I fell off the wagon big time this summer. Maybe some snazzy new running clothes from TJX will do the trick 🙂

Great suggestions! The fanny pack would be something I should definitely consider having that I hadn’t thought of before.
I ran 5 half marathons last year, prior to that, I had ran one back in 2004. I’d recommend getting up at least 2 hours before the race begins so you have time to eat (your regular breakfast) and digest your food. I pop two ibuprofens before the race to deal with any minor aches. Also, I apply body glide everywhere to prevent or minimize chaffing (it is an awesome product). I run in shorts, but I second running in whatever you’re used to. Good luck in your race! I’m taking a bit of time off, but I’ll be doing another one soon since I still haven’t reached my goal (sub 90).
