On the weekends or days when I photograph for the blog, I often curl my hair. (You can see how I get big, glamorous curls here or beachy waves here!) But on average days, I typically don’t take the time. Once I shower, I just blow dry and go. Through trial and error, I’ve found products and techniques that help me get the job done quickly and with smooth strands. You know what that means? Less heat styling! So today I’m sharing my top blow drying tips for smooth strands!
The process all starts with shampoo. I’ve been using Cibu Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner off and on for about a year, and I can tell the difference when I’m using it. After letting my hair air dry just a bit, I work a small amount (about a dime size) of Cibu Shimmer Smoothing Cream into my ends. Then I comb it through. The smoothing cream helps calm frizz and fight humidity!
Afterwards, I do the same process with Shine Squad Argan Oil Treatment (about 2 drops). What I love about this product is that it seals the cuticle of your hair and acts as a heat protectant. It also adds some shine, and who doesn’t want glossy strands?!
Now it’s time to get to blow drying. My go-to blowdryer is the ghd air. It’s quiet, and it cuts my drying time by a ton. I always use it with the nozzle attachment! (For traveling though, I’m obsessed with this T3 compact blowdryer set! I took it on our recent California trip. It folds up, is lightweight, and is super-effective for such a little tool! It comes with a nozzle and is a must-have for travel!) For body and smoothness, I always use a round brush.
I start with a section directly under my ear and position the round brush right at the root. Then I slowly work the brush towards the ends, making sure to aim the nozzle of the blowdryer towards the ends. (This is important! You never want to blow dry from the ends towards the root. To avoid frizziness always aim the nozzle towards the ends!)
I continue this process until I get to the very top section of my hair.
To get extra volume on top, first I blow dry the opposite way I part my hair. (So I typically part on the right, so I part it the opposite way, on the left.) I focus the nozzle on my roots to mid shaft of my strands. Then I do the same process but with that section of hair over my face, Cousin It-style.
Lastly, I take small sections front to back and blow dry with the round brush from root to tip again.
To finish it off, I add one more drop of Shine Squad Argan Oil Treatment to my ends and comb through my hair. This helps finish the look off with a little extra shine!
Tada! Smooth strands without ever touching a flat iron.
