We’ve all experienced dry, itchy skin in the Winter, haven’t we? It’s like the Winter wind comes through, and immediately my skin turns dull and dry. But did you know that there are some quick, easy fixes that could vastly improve your skin? It’s not a pipe dream. Promise, promise. Today I teamed up with Vaseline® to bring you my top 5 ways to combat dry Winter skin. You’ll be hydrated and glowing in no time!
1. Avoid long, hot showers.
Man this one is haaaard, right? My husband hates showering after me because he claims that I turn the water heat up to skin-scalding levels. While that might be just a slight exaggeration, I do love a hot shower. Sometimes I just want to stand in there under the water. It’s too dang cold to get out! (And it’s also a good way to hide from my toddler. Juuuust kidding. She always finds me.) But really, long hot showers are doing my (and your!) skin a huge disservice.
The length (and heat unfortunately) of your shower can make the condition of your dry Winter skin much worse. Frequent long hot showers can deplete the skin of natural oils and wreak havoc on your skin. Shorten shower time and decrease the temp, even if it’s only a couple days a week! It will make a difference!
2. Exfoliate regularly and gently!
It might seem a bit counterintuitive to scrub your skin when it’s dry, but exfoliating is a must. It not only improves the appearance of your skin by removing the dull, dry skin cells, but it also prepares your skin for moisturizing! But there is one caveat: you have to be gentle! You don’t want to exfoliate daily. (I aim for twice a week!) And you certainly don’t want to scrub your skin raw. You can use a shower gel scrub, a sugar scrub, or even dry brush your body before jumping in the shower! And don’t forget that directly after exfoliating, you want to grab your moisturizer!
3. Moisturize
If you don’t have a great moisturizer, then you’re doing your skin a huge disservice. I swear by Vaseline® Intensive Care™ Essential Healing Lotion because it leaves my skin deeply moisturized and looking noticeably healthier. It’s not like your typical lotion. It actually contains deep healing moisturizers and droplets of Vaseline® Jelly that absorb deeply to heal dry skin! And although Vaseline® Essential Healing is super-hydrating, it’s not greasy. Of course, it smells amazing too. Isn’t that important to every woman?! I put it on directly after my shower (or on first thing on the days I don’t shower #motherhood). Although you wouldn’t want to exfoliate daily, you can use Vaseline® Intensive Care® lotions every day! You can pick some up at Walmart and other food, drug and mass retailers nationwide.
4. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Are you drinking enough water? The condition of your skin is often an indicator of how hydrated you are! When it’s cold, I want to drink all the hot drinks, but we all know that coffee and other caffeinated beverages are dehydrating. I love sipping on hot lemon water to get my hot drink fix. It’s so quenching! If you find yourself struggling to meet you daily water intake, try fruit infused water. (I love throwing blueberries or strawberries in ice water!)
5. Use a humidifier. Ever since having a little one, I’ve realized the importance of humidifiers. Our pediatrician told us once the heat kicks on, the humidifier should come on. And we’ve been religious about it! Turning on your heat is a non-negotiable, but it zaps the air of moisture. A humidifier adds water vapor to the air and increases humidity, which can help your skin maintain moisture. Plug one in on your nightstand and let it run while you sleep. Not only will you have more moisturized skin, but it can also help improve the function of your sinuses. That means less nasal irritation and shortened colds or viruses! Win-win!
Do you have any additional tips to combat dry Winter skin? I’d love to hear ’em!

This is such a great post! I battle with such horrible dry skin in the winter and it drives me nuts! My biggest culprit is the long hot showers at night, it’s my peace and quiet time lol! I never thought to try this lotion, and I may just have to pick it up next time I’m at the store! I’m also thinking about trying a humidifier now!
Thanks for tips girl!

I’m really bad about #1!! That’s my all day, everyday fake spa day, just standing in the shower! I don’t know if I could stop that one! 🙂

Good tips! Hydration is key for sure. I am guilty of taking long baths though which I know doesn’t help.

This brand makes my favorite aloe lotion that I use everyday! I also agree that to maintain healthy, moisturized skin we have to nix the hot showers and exfoliate!
