You know what I’m pumped for? SHORTS SEASON! We’re not quite there here in Virginia, but it’s coming. So, I took advantage of the latest Madewell sale and ordered all.the.shorts. No, really. I’m pretty sure I ordered nearly every pair. ?But finding the perfect pair of shorts is sometimes even harder than finding a great pair of jeans, right? So whether you like a classic pair of cutoffs or are into mom shorts, get ready to find your perfect pair in my best Madewell shorts try-on!
For reference, I’m 5’7.5″ and currently a size 28/29, 8, or a medium. I typically wear a size 28 in Madewell denim! I ordered all of the shorts in a size 28, but if you ever have any question about sizing, I’ll list details beneath each photo!
High Rise Cutoffs
If you’re looking for a classic pair of high rise cutoff shorts, I don’t think you could go wrong with these! They have a 10 3/4″ rise and 4 inch inseam. Although they come rolled, they are not sewn, so you can lengthen them by flipping the fold. They have stretch but still feel like they will hold their shape with wear.

Button Front Shorts
These are nearly identical as the last pair with a button-front! They have the same rise and inseam (10 3/4″ and 4 ” respectively) as the previous pair as well but they do fit much more relaxed. The stretch is significantly more in these! I would suggest sizing down one.

Black Button Front Shorts
If you’re looking for black denim shorts, these are awesome! They also have the same high rise and inseam (10 3/4″ and 4″ respectively)! However unlike the blue denim button front shorts, these have less stretch and feel a little more stiff. Fit-wise, they’re the most snug of the three I tried. If you like a more relaxed fit, size up one.

Utility Short
How cute are these?! I wasn’t sure I was going to like them, but YEP. They’re adorable. These are a higher rise at 11″. They also have a slightly longer inseam at 4 1/4″. Those don’t seem like big differences from the previous pairs, but they do feel more full coverage! They have plenty of stretch but because of the slightly higher rise, I would be more comfortable in a size up. (Keep in mind, I have more of a straighter figure. For those of you with a smaller waist, I’d stick with your true size!

Momjean Shorts
If you prefer more of a rigid denim option, these are for you! They are a 100% cotton, which means they stretch only slightly! These are the type of shorts that will loosen slightly over time and mold to your shape. The inseam is a little shorter with these as well. They’re 2.5″ long. They were for sure one of my favs!

Destroyed Momjean
For a slightly more distressed option, these are the same as the last pair with a higher cutoff on one side and contrast denim patching. Honestly, I didn’t love these on me. The slightly higher cut on the leg felt like a little too much. If you’re shorter, it might not be as big of a deal! But if I had to chose, I prefer the non-destroyed version better!

Striped Cropped Pants
Okay, so these aren’t shorts, but I did purchase them during my last order and I couldn’t miss sharing them! These cropped pants are a cotton-linen blend, making them so comfortable for the hottest of days. Honestly, there are times when I’d prefer a pant like these over denim shorts. I’m sure those of you who live in humidity feel me there! These have a flat front waist and elastic back. They also have button details on the side. I recommend sizing down. I’m wearing the small.
