Let’s be honest: motherhood is one of the busiest and stressful seasons of life. It can feel hard to find the time to get dressed, much less care about outfits to wear. And the last thing we want is just another thing added to our plate. But that’s why I came up with my go-to fall mom outfit formula. When I have zero capacity left, I know I can rely on it to help me get dressed and out the door fast without any additional stress.
It’s so simple, easy and most importantly, repeatable! The elements stay the same, but I can create an entire week’s worth of unique outfits, making it look like I’ve got it together with minimal effort.
Fall Mom Outfit Formula
The elements the make up the outfit formula are simple: we are starting with an elastic waistband pant. (Of course you could always sub for jeans! But when I’m on carpool duty, which is five to six days a week these days, I’m all about a comfy pant.
Then we’ll add a top. Most of the time I reach for a plain white or black tee. These built-in-bra tank tops are another mom cheat code! Another one of my go-to’s is a fun graphic tee.
Lastly, we’re finishing the look off with an outfit topper. To be honest, my favorite go-to outfit topper is this denim jacket. I wear mine once to twice a week. I like it because of the oversized fit, which is more on-trend than traditional fitted versions, and it’s just easy! It truly goes with everything.
But if you’re not a denim jacket girl, the world is your oyster. Jacket options are endless! I just bought this one from Madewell over the weekend and can’t wait to wear it. I also tend to opt for cardigans or an open button down. As the weather gets cooler, I also love a good leather or faux leather jacket!
I know you want to see the formula in action, so here are nine easy, repeatable outfit examples to help you start implementing this fall mom outfit formula into your own wardrobe!
Cardigan Outfits
A tee and your favorite elastic pant may feel boring, but add a cardigan on top and it both looks and feels more complete! For a cozier vibe as the weather cools, this oversized version is a go-to that I own in two colors.

And of course a classic tailored cardigan is always a yes. I just snagged this one from Gap and am so impressed with the softness and fit! Where it open or…

button it up! I love how the tee still peeks through, creating a layered look for this outfit!

Denim Top Outfits
Thank goodness for the popularity of the denim oxford top! What I love about these is that they’re a lighter layer than your typical denim jacket. They also flow and have a more relaxed feel.

And since they are so popular, there are an abundance of denim top options out there! This slightly western-inspired dark wash feels a little more trendy! I love mixing up the look but buttoning them up. Keep that tee there for the layered look!

For weekends, you’ll see me in a variation of this exact outfit nine times out of ten. Ditch your leggings and give these wide leg athletic pants a try! They are comfier and way more flattering!

Denim Jacket Outfits
I’d be remiss if I didn’t tackle ole faithful: the denim jacket. She has been a staple in our wardrobes for decades for a reason! If you want a more updated look, swap your classic fitted cut for an oversized version like mine. Instant cool mom vibes, especially when paired with a fun track pant.

Love a lounge look?! This set has been my favorite for years now, and it just so happens to pair perfectly with a denim jacket. Adding the jacket completes the outfit, making it look appropriate for leaving the house!

Sweatpants can be everyday pants when you style them like this! Easy, comfy, and yet still on trend!
